No one wants to admit it, but we are promoting a society of fragile individuals: leaving one’s job to join “OnlyFans” is applauded by the press because, after all, it pays well. Although it ultimately involves prostituting one’s own body, it is accepted because it is only virtual, and above all, lucrative.
We praise young graduates who defend their thesis immediately after giving birth, or while studying twenty hours a day, “the rest is a waste of time,” normalizing behaviors that are actually harmful, bordering on self-harm, without appreciating the right timing to live and do things.
But then we feel guilty for yet another story of a young man who takes his own life because his degree will never come. We have long promoted the idea that “either you’re a doctor or you’re nothing,” and even parents refuse to accept that their own child should not go to university, as a social stigma.
And no one thinks about the great mismatch between countless (and often useless) university courses and what the job market really needs, with Southern Italy largely based on the principle of “run away or seek recommendations,” and Northern Italy suffering from low salaries negotiated by unions with high costs of living, sometimes very high, to mention the coveted Milan.
A society of fragile individuals.
In all this, I consider the press substantially responsible for the type of light it prefers to shed on certain issues, while addressing those just mentioned by me with mere commiseration, and therefore useless for society.
In fact, the true enemy of the politician should be the journalist for the courage to assert uncomfortable truths, tell what happens, and denounce it. But our journalists are either fundamentally recommended by political connections inserted into newsrooms, or if they criticize the politician, they do so only on personal matters, on how they dress, on their children, and other completely irrelevant matters.
